Concerts at The Shops Performance to Benefit Hospice Maui

Wailea, Maui, Hawaii – (May 15, 2019) The Shops at Wailea welcomes Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning  Hawaiian reggae folk rock band Kanekoa to Concerts at The Shops with a performance on Wednesday, May 29 from 5:30-7pm. The May concert series benefits Hospice Maui.

Heralded as “The Hawaiian Grateful Dead” by one of the band’s original members, Kanekoa has been playing together for 20 years, seamlessly melding the sounds of traditional Hawaiian music with rock, folk, blues, and reggae elements. The band’s 2007 album “Under the Coconut Sky”’ is distributed worldwide. Showing no signs of slowing down, Kanekoa won the Nā Hōkū award in the reggae category for its 2016 release of “Tales of the Fruit Stand Mystic,” and was nominated again in 2017 for the album “Soic Fruit Volume IV.”

The band has shared the stage with the likes of Jake Shimabukuro, 7 Walkers (Bill Kreutzman of The Grateful Dead), Los Lobos, John Popper of Blues Traveller, Joan Osbourse, Marshal Tucker Band, Willie Nelson, John Crus, and many more. The band and their music also appeared in the Farelly Brother’s 2007 film, “Heartbreak Kid” with Ben Stiller.

Concerts at The Shops is a free, monthly concert series that is open to the public and features headlining musicians from across the Hawaiian Islands. This community event occurs on the third and fifth Wednesday of every month at the main Fountain Courtyard.

In a continued effort to give back to the community, The Shops at Wailea supports a different Maui non-profit each month with 60 percent of the special event parking fees going to the selected charity. The non-profit recipient for the month of May is Hospice Maui, which has served the diverse community of Maui with quality, compassionate hospice care for 35 years. Unlike other forms of care that focus only on the patient’s physical needs, Hospice Maui also provides emotional and spiritual support for the patient and loved ones, as well as bereavement support for an entire year.

The Shops’ special events are designed to enrich the community through exploration and discovery in the arts and music, while supporting local businesses and non-profit partners. The four-hour special event parking voucher is available for $5 and can be purchased at the non-profit’s parking table.
